The Penang State Museum is housed in a two storey British colonial building that was once Penang Free School but half the building destroyed during World War II by Japanese bombing planes. It is still a beautiful building and the museum is a pleasant 1 hour walk through the rich cultural history of George Town which was founded in 1786 when Penang island was named Prince of Wales Island. The statue shows the founder of Penang who was Sir Captain Francis Light of the East India Company.
